Bronze Fennel

Foeniculum vulgare

RHS Plants for Pollinators

Grown as an ornamental perennial rather than a herb, this impressive plant adds beautiful contrast with its striking leaves, which finely veil other surrounding plants, allowing an occasional glimpse through. Flat yellow flowerheads appear from July to August. Its aromatic and tactile foliage make it ideal for a sensory garden.

Sowing & growing

Sow in-situ March-May, or a fortnight before the last frost. Sow 10mm deep with 30cm spacing between plants. Keep at 15-18°C. If weather unexpectedly turns cold, young plants may need extra protection under cloches. Keep watered during dry periods. Plant should keep flowering throughout the summer.

Aftercare

May self-seed freely. To prevent this, remove the flowers regularly.
