Butternut Squash 'Waltham'

Vegetables

Butternut Squash 'Waltham'

Cucurbita moschata

A great all-rounder. This butternut squash produces firm flesh, which is smooth with a fine nutty flavour which sweetens after storage. With a small seed cavity, you get more usable flesh inside. With thick straight necks, they are easy to peel and chop. It stores well and stays firm once cooked.

Sowing & growing

Sow inside in modules from Apr-Jun 15mm deep with deeds on their side. Use free draining compost and keep above 10°C. Pot on to individual pots once germinated and plant out after frosts have passed in sunny location. Do not keep too wet or seeds may rot. Alternatively sow direct in May-Jun and cover with a cloche if frosts haven't passed.

Aftercare

Keep moist for good growth and to avoid drought stress, feed every 2 weeks with balanced fertiliser.
