Allium schoenoprasum

RHS Plants for Pollinators

Upright, deep-green strap-like leaves are produced throughout spring and summer. When harvested, these emit their characteristic onion scent, making them an essential plant for kitchen gardeners. Star-shaped, light-purple flowers are produced in spherical clusters throughout the summer months. These are a magnet for bees and other pollinators, and add an ornamental element.

Sowing & growing

Sow under cover in Feb-Apr, or directly outside in Apr-Jun. Cover seeds with 1cm of fine seed compost. Ensure compost does not dry out during germination. If started under cover, usually ready to plant out in 6 weeks. Plant out 30cm apart.

Aftercare

Remove dead flowers before they set seed to keep plant producing fresh leaves for harvest. Will die back naturally in autumn.
