Cosmos 'Rubenza'

Cosmos

RHS Plants for Pollinators

The intense burgundy-red petals of this annual fade to rose-pink as they age, giving a multi-tonal effect. With a more compact habit and shorter stems than other Cosmos varieties, it is less likely to need staking if planted in a sheltered location. Attractive to pollinators and excellent as a cut flower.

Sowing & growing

Sow under glass March-May in trays of moist seed compost. Cover with a very light layer of soil. Germinates at about 21°C. Transplant seedlings into individual pots when large enough to handle. Keep protected from frosts, and acclimatise before planting out May-June. Can be sown in situ May-June in fine, moist soil.

Aftercare

Keep soil moist until plants are established. Pinch out the growing tips of young plants for bushier growth. Remove spent flowers regularly to keep plants blooming until first frosts.
