Pot Marigold

RHS Plants for Pollinators

A tall and showy annual marigold with deep-red buds that open to bright orange flowers. Long flower stems make it popular with flower arrangers. However, it also offers all the advantages of a traditional pot marigold, including edible petals and the ability to attract beneficial insects. Enjoys sun or partial shade.

Sowing & growing

Sow indoors in pots of moist seed compost March-April. For early flowers the following year direct sow in Aug-Oct where they are to flower. Sow in situ April-May, 1cm deep in finely raked soil, and thin out seedlings to 30cm apart when large enough. Germination should occur at temperatures of 18-23°C. Harden off seedlings started inside before planting out.

Aftercare

May self-seed so remove young seedlings in subsequent years if you do not want it to spread. Deadhead often throughout growing season to keep flowers coming.
