Digitalis purpurea (Foxgloves)
Foxgloves
A stalwart plant for any woodland border, this species looks especially effective when positioned in large swathes. In early summer, each plant produces a lofty upright stem which is cloaked down one side with tubular bright pink flowers with contrasting speckled throats. Self-seeds freely. Growing calendar
Sowing & growing
Seed of Digitalis need light to germinate. Sow the seeds sparingly and firm down onto the surface of moist seedling compost, do not cover with soil. The seedlings can be pricked out to individual pots when large enough. Finally transplant in autumn to their final growing position. Alternatively they can be sown outside where they are to grow in May-June.
Aftercare
Dead head if you do not want the plants to self-seed around the garden.
