RHS Plants for Pollinators

An essential herb for fish and meat lovers. Both the seeds and ferny foliage of this annual have a warm, delicate aniseed flavour. They also make good cut flower fillers with a vibrant splash of green. Positioning the plant in a sunny, sheltered spot encourages many beneficial insects to visit the clusters of tiny acid-yellow flowers. Leave the seed heads for winter interest and to allow the plants to self seed.

Sowing & growing

Can be sown under glass all year round for use in cooking. Surface-sow onto moist seed compost and lightly cover with soil, as seeds need light to germinate. Direct sow outdoors March-July. Sow lightly in well-prepared soil. Suitable for succession sowing from March for constant supply through growing season.

Aftercare

May need some support if grown alone or in exposed locations. To encourage fresh leaf-growth, continue to remove any flower buds as they appear throughout the season.
