Echinacea 'White Swan'

White Coneflower

RHS Plants for Pollinators

A coneflower with bold, white blooms, with centres that gradually change from green-white and flat to orange and cone-shaped surrounded by a striking whirl of white petals. Ideal for pollinators. Deadheading will encourage more flowers. Better still, cut flowers while young and they will last over a week in a vase. At the end of the season, leave some seedheads in autumn and the birds will flock to the seed.

Sowing & growing

Sow under cover Feb-June. Sow seeds 3-4mm deep in seed compost. Requires heat of 20-25c to germinate; a warm windowsill or propagator are ideal. Prick out into individual pots when large enough to handle. Grow on for 6-10 weeks and harden off before planting in final growing position 30cm apart.

Aftercare

Plant should be kept moist. Can be divided every 3-4 years. Cut back to ground level before plants re-emerge in spring.
