Blanket Flower

RHS Plants for Pollinators

Blanket flowers make versatile garden plants, perfect for beds, borders and containers. Once established, they cope well during dry spells, and tolerate coastal conditions too. The flowers are attractive to beneficial insects and are suitable for cutting too. Do not always flower first season if sown late.

Sowing & growing

Sow undercover Feb-April. Surface sow in moist seed compost and transplant seedlings when large enough to handle. Acclimatise before planting out when risks of frosts have passed. Plant in well-draining soil, ideally in full sun. Alternatively sow directly where they are to flower May-June.

Aftercare

Benefits from regular deadheading, Cut back at the end of the summer to give new growth a chance to establish before winter. Divide and replant large clumps in spring.
