Hordeum jubatum -

Foxtail barley

Looks particularly impactful when grown in large drifts. Tolerant of most soils and conditions, except waterlogged soil and heavy shade. The silky, pink spikelets move gently in breeze and add a sense of movement to the border. Well-suited to coastal gardens as it is salt-tolerant.

Sowing & growing

Sow indoors Feb-Apr in moist, well drained compost. Cover with thin layer of compost or vermiculite. Keep in light conditions as it aids germination. Propagate at 20°C. When large enough to handle, transplant into individual pots. Grow on in cooler conditions and acclimatise prior to planting out 45cm apart once risk of frost has passed.

Aftercare

Once established it requires little care. To tidy up, comb your fingers through to remove unsightly leaves or flowers.
