Kale 'Nero di Toscana'

Brassica oleracea

With handsome tall, blue-green leaves, this Kale variety brings wonderful texture to the winter vegetable garden. Harvest autumn-winter. Much used in Italian cooking. Young leaves can be eaten raw in salads. Remove yellowing leaves and mulch well. The flavour and texture improves after the first real frosts of autumn.

Sowing & growing

Can be sown under cover all year round for young kale salad leaves, or started early Jan-March for planting out May-July. Sow 2 seeds per module and thin out the weaker seedling. Transplant once large enough. Sow outdoors March-June, thinly into drills 1.5cm deep in a well-prepared seed bed. Thin out young plants to 45cm. For mature plants, transplant into rich, fertile soil 60cm apart and protect with netting or horticultural fleece.

Aftercare

Harvest lower leaves first, working your way up the plant. May require protection from bids and insects.
