Wildflowers
Knautia arvensis -
Field Scabious
A British native found in free-draining grass fields. This perennial wildflower will provide colour from summer through to autumn with lavender-coloured, scabious-like flowers. They are loved by bees and butterflies alike. A great choice for a mini meadow, where the long flowering season provides good value. Makes an excellent cut flower that will last up to a week in the vase.

Growing calendar
Sowing & growing
Seeds need to be exposed to winter cold to germinate, so easiest sown directly where they are to grow Sep-Nov for germination the following spring. Sow seeds 6mm deep in drills 30cm apart, into soil which has been raked to a fine tilth. Keep well-watered and thin out to 50cm between plants. Sow under cover Feb-May, 2mm deep into moist seed compost. When seedlings are large enough, transplant into pots and acclimatise before planting out into final growing locations. Prefers alkaline soils.
Aftercare
Cut flowers regularly to encourage more flowers. If you want them to self-seed, allow late flowers to remain to set seed.
