Moluccella laevis -
Bells of Ireland
An unusual annual, with tall spires of green, papery, bell-shaped flowers. Fantastic in the cutting garden, filling out and providing contrast with other flowers. Long lasting once cut, they can also be dried by harvesting at the end of summer and hanging upside down.

Sowing & growing
Sow under cover Feb-April, 3mm deep in seed compost. As cold is required for germination, place the trays and pots of sown seeds in sealed plastic bags and chill at 3-5°C for 2 weeks. Then propagate at 18-21°C until germination occurs. When large enough to handle, transplant seedlings into larger pots and grow on. Acclimatise before planting out 30cm apart when risk of frost has passed.
Aftercare
May require staking in exposed locations.
