RHS Plants for Pollinators

A glamourous annual with deep-red flowers against fresh-green leaves. Both foliage and flowers are edible with a peppery taste, and the colourful flowers look amazing added to salads. Nasturtiums make useful companion plants, as they loved by pollinators, and will help attract white fly away from crops such as melons, cucumbers and tomatoes.

Sowing & growing

Sow under cover March-May in moist, seed compost, 1-2cm deep. Once the seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant into individual pots. When the risk of frost has passed, harden off the plants before planting out. Alternatively sow outside directly May-July and space the plants 20-30cm apart.

Aftercare

Deadhead to prolong the flowering period. Flowers best if planted in poor soil, so no need to fertilise.
