RHS Plants for Pollinators

An early-flowering, cherry-red nasturtium with attractive semi double flowers. The leaves and flowers of this annual are edible with a peppery flavour. The flowers look beautiful added to salads. Nasturtiums make useful companion plants, as they loved by pollinators, and will help attract white fly away from crops such as melons, cucumbers and tomatoes.

Sowing & growing

Sow under glass from March to April in moist seed compost, 1-2cm deep. Once the seedlings are large enough to handle transplant into pots. When all risk of frost has passed, acclimatise the plants prior to planting out. Alternatively sow outside directly where it will grow from May to July, space the plants 20 cm apart.

Aftercare

Deadhead regularly to prolong the flowering period, no need to feed as you get the best flower display when growing in poor soil.
