Tagetes 'Vanilla Cream'

French Marigold

RHS Plants for Pollinators

Annual bedding marigold with masses of pale-yellow blooms. Flowers from June until the first frosts. Very attractive to bees and other pollinators. The scent of marigolds deter whitefly, so best grown as a companion plant with tomatoes and other vegetables. Equally charming edging borders and pathways.

Flowering

Sowing & growing

Sow under cover Feb-Apr on moist seed compost. Lightly cover seed with a fine layer of compost and keep at 21-25 °C until they germinate. Do not exclude light, as it aids germination. When large enough to handle, transplant seedlings into pots. Acclimatise to outdoor temperatures and plant out 30cm apart when all risk of frost has passed.

Aftercare

Deadhead regularly to encourage continued flowering. Flowers and foliage are both edible with a citrus taste. At the end of the season, pull up and compost.
