Tomato 'Alicante'

Lycopersicon esculentum

A high-performing variety of tomato. Although best grown in a greenhouse, this variety will ripen outside, even in unreliable British summers. Harvest

Sowing & growing

Feb-April, sow under cover in seed trays filled with seed compost. Cover seeds with fine layer of compost or vermiculite. Place on a sunny windowsill or in propagator at 15-20°C. Transplant when seedlings have 2 true leaves, handling by the leaves rather than the stem. Acclimatise outdoors when danger of frost has passed.

Aftercare

Tie in main stem to wooden cane with soft garden twine and continue to pinch off side shoots as it grows. Water regularly and feed weekly when flowers start to form.
