Verbascum 'Snowy Spires'

Mullein

RHS Plants for Pollinators

An architectural form of Mullein with stunning colouring. This perennial is also very attractive to pollinators – yet another reason to try it! Grows well in poor soil and is ideal for gravel-gardens or cottage-style gardens. The flowers also make striking cut flowers and last well in water. Verbascum grows best in full sun.

Sowing & growing

Sow inside Jan-Apr, ideally in root trainers or deep pots of seed compost. Keep at 21°C in moist and shaded conditions Reduce the moisture level once germinated and grow on in cooler conditions. Acclimatise before planting out 45cm apart, when risk of frost has passed. Alternatively, direct sow outdoors July-August, for early flowers the following year.

Aftercare

To encourage the plant to set more blooms, cut off the centre flower stalk once faded, just above the emerging side-shoots.
