Verbena rigida 'Santos'

Slender Vervain

RHS Plants for Pollinators

Perennial flowering in its first year, with good resistance to heat and drought. The dense clusters of tiny purple flowers are loved by bees and other pollinators. This much shorter verbena provides good ground cover and looks wonderful planted in large blocks or drifts. Can also be grown in containers but should ideally overwinter inside.

Sowing & growing

Sow under cover Feb-April in good seed compost. Cover seeds with thin layer of compost and place at 24-27°C. Take care not to over water. Transplant seedlings into pots once large enough to handle. Acclimatise to outdoor temperatures before planting out 40cm apart, once the risk of frost has passed.

Aftercare

Mulch around base of plant for winter protection. In colder areas, the tuberous roots should be lifted and kept frost free much like Dahlias.
